5 Reasons we chose TPU over Silicon

What is TPU

TPU stands for ‘Thermoplastic Polyurethane’ and is often referred to as the bridge between rubbers and plastics. The material appears rubber-like, which means it is very elastic, flexible, and smooth to the touch, but at the same time it is extremely durable and strong.

The TPU we use in our products (currently the Sensory Balls) offers high wear resistance, flexibility across a wide range of temperatures, and high elasticity over the entire hardness range. It also possesses excellent resistance to oils, greases, and solvents.

In addition, the TPU range also offers new possibilities for increased sustainability, by reduced carbon footprint without compromising on quality or performance. Up to 60 percent of the carbon content* of the TPU series is sourced from biomass, depending on product hardness. In comparison to fossil based TPUs, the carbon footprint can be reduced by more than 20 percent.

(*Bio-based content as determined according to ASTM-D6866)

Advantages of TPU

  1. TPU is 100% recyclable and biodegradable
The TPU we use is more eco-friendly than most other plastics. It is an advanced material that is much more environmentally friendly than alternatives such as PVC, since TPU is recyclable and biodegradable in 3 - 5 years.
  1. TPU has a high heat resistance
TPU has a considerable heat resistance, meaning it will not melt or warp when exposed to high-grade heat sources. TPU can withstand ambient temperatures of up to 120 degrees Celsius (its softening point is 120 °C.
NB: However, you should not sterilize TPU products in the microwave, as temperatures can exceed 120 degrees!
  1. TPU is durable
TPU is abrasion resistant, giving it the ability to maintain appearances and physical integrity against scratches or scrapes. As one of the tougher materials on the market, TPU has a high-strength composition. This means that it is very, very tough to break in normal circumstances, in contrast to e.g., silicone. It would take considerable force beyond what most items encounter in a day-to-day routine to break TPU. Because of its abrasion resistant, it can also withstand impacts and is resistant to many chemicals.
  1. TPU is extremely flexible and smooth to the touch
Since this material has a high elasticity, it lends itself naturally to absorbing shocks or impacts.
  1. TPU is a non-toxic and 100% food safe material
TPU does not contain any chemicals that interfere with endocrine and hormone systems, nor does it contribute to PH change in soil or water. It contains no dangerous ingredients according to REACH Compliance (EC) No 1907/2006.
  1. TPU has a high liquid resistance
TPU is also resistant to oil, grease, and stains, which makes it ideal for keeping up its appearance while safeguarding items from liquids. Further, TPU is water and moisture resistant, reducing bacterial home creation.

Why TPU?

In short, we have carefully selected the VERY best material for our Baby Bitie and Overall Bib. TPU is the "Rolls-Royce” within plastic.

Further, TPU is developed according to GMP (Good Manufacturing Practices). GMP aims to ensure that products directly related to human health, such as medicine, medical tools, food, and cosmetics, are produced in safe environments and conditions.

Why not silicone?

TPU has the same good properties as silicone, but is better for the environment, as it is both developed and can be disposed of/recycled in the best way.

Another reason to why we have chosen TPU and not silicone for our new iteration of Sensory Balls is the durability. Silicone materials are poorer lasting. Continuous use wears silicone products out and the silicone turns gooey and sticky.

Another problem with silicone is that is it also prone to cuts and abrasions, further decreasing its longevity and reliability, while also attracting dirt and bacteria when used as a teether.

Though silicone is a great material and have some great properties, we have chosen to use TPU, that surpasses silicone in its properties and qualities.
